When I expressed interest in getting a dog, I got a lot of discouragement from friends and family. They said "it's a big commitment," "pets are really expensive," "you'll have to change your life around them."
I promptly ignored them and went to adopt a dog! I went with my friend Lauren (who I consider a pet expert) to Animal Haven to look at their dogs. I saw one dog that was a tiny Pointer. He was very cute, but I didn't feel a deep connection. Then I asked to see their pit bull. I had a pit bull growing up so I know they are smart, super lazy, cuddle monsters. When they brought out Blair (formerly Amy) she was pulling on her leash and had a toy in her mouth. Her face was messed up and her nipples looked as if she were pregnant, yet I fell instantly in love. I asked if I could adopt her and within 3 days, Lauren and I brought Blair, to my apartment!
People were right, though! Having a pet was a huge commitment. It was expensive. And my life changed drastically. Blair was a holy terror the first 4 months because she tugged on her leash! On top of that my schedule changed to revolve around her. I woke up everyday at 4:30 am to walk her 3 miles, then came home right after work to let her out to pee. After the first month, I was worried I made a huge mistake. Luckily I bought great toys like the ones below that distracted her from the leash. Buying her toys that last longer than one day, and her food (she's 60 pounds, so she eats a lot), and recently an automatic dog feeder was expensive (not including vet bills- $300 each time), but it was worth it to see her happy and healthy and at home with me.

Adopting Blair has been the best decision of my life. I wouldn't change any second of it. When people ask if they should get a dog, I say unequivocally: YES! It is challenging, and time consuming, and expensive, but Blair is my best friend, my confidant, and my baby.
P.S. She's also my muse! Listen to the song I wrote about her. It has some hilarious photos too!
